A study performed in Canada showed that asthma among children was four times greater in 1996 than it was in 1984. The American Lung Association did a study in 1982 to find out why there was such a rise in lung related diseases and allergies. The air in the homes they tested was up to 100 times more polluted than the air outside. This was because the homes had no good ventilation system (FRESH AIR) and everyone was breathing higher levels of VOC’s, bacteria, viruses, mold and radon. Around the same time the EPA came to the same conclusion as the American Lung Association. Today we are becoming more aware of how important it is to live in a healthy environment. We know with higher levels of bacteria and viruses we will get sick more often. With higher levels of mold we have a greater chance of exposure to the deadly toxic types of mold that can cause serious illness and even death. These exposures can seriously damage a whole family’s health while being exposed and can continue to cause serious problems even after exposure. With higher levels of radon we have a higher chance of contracting lung cancer. Radon is not talked about much today but remains a real threat. The EPA determined years ago that radon is the #2 cause of lung cancer. You can see why we can’t just put up some walls, put a roof on it and call it a home. It’s imperative that we use all the scientific knowledge and experience from the past. It is also important that we carefully evaluate the newest products and building technologies to be sure we are using the best products and building processes available.
